Dashboard Templates
Templates help you standardize reporting across teams and customers without rebuilding dashboards from scratch.
This guide explains:
- How templates work
- How applying a template works
- How updating template-based dashboards works
- How to avoid overwriting custom work
How templates work
Section titled “How templates work”A template is a reusable blueprint. It saves dashboard structure and logic, not live data.
What a template includes
Section titled “What a template includes”- Widget layout and widget settings
- Calculations
- Modified dataset definitions
- Filter variable definitions
What a template does not include
Section titled “What a template does not include”- Live data values
- Existing share links
- Dashboard group assignments
- Your current filter selections
When you apply a template, Resplendent creates (or updates) dashboard content and connects it to the integration(s) you choose.
Template types
Section titled “Template types”In Template Gallery, you may see two types:
- Dashboard templates: full multi-widget dashboard layouts
- Widget templates: single widgets that can be copied or used to update an existing widget
Permissions and access
Section titled “Permissions and access”To create templates from dashboards, you need template creation access.
To apply templates, you must also have access to the required datasets/integrations. If access checks fail, template application is blocked until those issues are fixed.
Apply a template
Section titled “Apply a template”Open Template Gallery
Section titled “Open Template Gallery”- Go to Dashboards → Templates
- Choose an integration category
- Browse or search templates
- Click Apply (or Update if it is already in use)
You can preview a template before applying.
What happens during apply
Section titled “What happens during apply”The apply flow may include these steps, depending on the template:
- UTC warning (if your profile timezone is UTC)
- Integration check
- Choose the integration connection(s) to use
- Copy or Update (widget templates)
- Copy to New Dashboard or Update Existing Widget
- Dashboard selection (widget copy flow)
- Tier limit check
- Verifies applying the template won’t exceed your plan limits
- Shows current usage and how many additional resources are needed
- Blocks application if limits would be exceeded
- Update dependencies
- Optionally choose exactly which dependent items should be updated
- You can also turn Update Column Links on or off from this step
- Dataset access check
- Must pass before template is queued
- Apply template
After submission, Resplendent queues the apply job and shows a confirmation toast.
The dashboard list keeps these jobs up to date automatically. If your connection drops and reconnects, the list refreshes again. While a template job is still running, the dashboard list also rechecks status about every 30 seconds.
Applying vs updating: what is the difference?
Section titled “Applying vs updating: what is the difference?”First-time apply
Section titled “First-time apply”If the template is not in use yet, Apply creates template-based content connected to your selected integrations.
Updating an existing template-based dashboard
Section titled “Updating an existing template-based dashboard”For dashboard templates already in use, the action button changes to Update.
Choosing Update re-applies the template logic to linked content so it matches the latest template version.
Template status on dashboards
Section titled “Template status on dashboards”For linked dashboards, dashboard list status can show:
- Applying Template: update/apply is running
- Template Applied: latest apply succeeded
- Template Failed: apply failed (check notifications)
- May Have Stalled: apply has taken unusually long
How to update safely (without losing custom work)
Section titled “How to update safely (without losing custom work)”When applying updates, dataset and dependency updates can overwrite prior manual edits.
Use this safer process:
- Open template apply flow
- On Update Dependencies?, choose whether to manually select items to update
- If you enable manual selection, uncheck items you do not want overwritten
- Set Update Column Links based on whether you want existing column links updated
- Continue and apply
If you need a fully custom dashboard that no longer receives template changes, disconnect it from the template.
Disconnect a dashboard from a template
Section titled “Disconnect a dashboard from a template”Disconnecting stops future template updates for that dashboard.
- Open Dashboards list
- Find the dashboard
- Click Disconnect from Template in the action menu
After disconnecting, the dashboard becomes independent.
Update a template definition (author workflow)
Section titled “Update a template definition (author workflow)”Templates are not directly edited in place. To revise one:
- Create/use a dashboard based on the existing template
- Make your changes
- Save it as a template (new template version/workflow)
- Optionally delete the older template if no longer needed
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”Template apply blocked by tier limits
Section titled “Template apply blocked by tier limits”If the tier limit check shows you would exceed your plan limits:
- Review the error details to see which resources are at capacity (dashboards, widgets, or datasets)
- Note your current usage vs. limit for each resource type
- Choose one of these options:
- Upgrade your tier - Go to Company → Subscription to access higher limits
- Free up resources - Delete unused dashboards, widgets, or datasets before applying
- Apply to existing - For widget templates, choose to update an existing widget instead of creating a new one
Template apply is blocked by dataset access
Section titled “Template apply is blocked by dataset access”- Confirm the integration is connected and healthy
- Confirm required tables are available
- Resolve any table-level access errors shown in the dialog
Template apply failed or seems stuck
Section titled “Template apply failed or seems stuck”- Check notifications for failure details
- If a template job runs too long, Resplendent marks it as failed after 5 minutes and shows an error notification
- If status shows May Have Stalled, open the dashboard and verify current state
- Retry apply/update after fixing access or mapping issues
Result does not match expectations
Section titled “Result does not match expectations”- Confirm you selected the correct integration mapping
- Review dependency selections from the apply flow
- Check whether column links were updated or preserved
